The National Restaurant Association was founded in 1919 to suppress workers’ wages and maintain the subminimum wage for tipped workers, and with a $50,000 contribution, is the current major funder of the opposition’s misinformation campaign against wage increases in Portland.
What Portland Workers Are Saying About Question D:
“I made my way up from clerk to department lead. It’s hard work but I like my job. I would be making $18 an hour but the City Council struck down the hazard wage. I negotiated a raise, but that was wiped out by a rent hike. I’m still on my parent’s health insurance and don’t own a car — the only reasons I can afford to keep working there. The $18 minimum wage would really help a lot.”
Jake, supermarket lead in Portland, ME
“I’m a single mom with a daughter in Portland schools. I’ve been in the service industry my entire working life. I love my job and living in our city, but with the seasonal fluctuation in tips, too often I don’t how we’ll make it to the end of the month. I simply want to be paid a fair day’s wage for a hard day’s work.”
Katie, tipped restaurant worker in Portland, ME
“I drive for a national ride-share company working 60-70 hours a week. After gas, maintenance, and insurance, I average less than $12 an hour. We had to reduce my daughter’s day care to one day a week, and that puts a lot of pressure on my wife. ‘Yes’ on D would make a huge difference for our family.”
Louis, ride-share driver in Portland, ME
Question D raises the minimum wage to $18 an hour for everyone in Portland — including tipped workers, who will earn $18 with tips on top.
